I am a former treasurer to DELTA for 4 years in the period from when it was NAG through to DELTA. For a short time, I was also an Exhibitions organiser. I had for many years before written many articles principally challenging the methods of deaf education and treatment of the deaf and championing the now called Natural Aural Method before I had even heard of NAG!
I am passionate about the natural method as it is so close to the experiences I had as a deaf child but without the current techniques and technology available today. There are differences that enabled me to be very much of the ‘hearing’ world and very little of the ‘Deaf’ world. This experience will always be of value to DELTA. Obviously being deaf and not part of the Deaf world puts me into a category that is easily misunderstood by many but it does put me in an enormously advantageous position. This should be to the benefit of DELTA and new deaf people and their parents and some professionals too. By ‘new’ deaf, I mean that we still have to be sensitive to those who have been brought up by other means and may not have had the benefit of the DELTA approach to teaching those who have lost their hearing in some form. The more that DELTA make themselves known, the more chance that the newly deafened will have of achieving their full potential as people. I am therefore very keen to be part of the organisation that is DELTA to achieve that aim. |
