Alison Holmans

I have been a member of DELTA since its early days as The Natural Aural Group. My inspiration came from the passion and enthusiasm of Con Powell who saw the potential in all deaf children to Listen and Talk.

I meet and work with happy, active and achieving deaf young children and people and know that this is what I want for all families and children.

To open doors and opportunities in education, play, careers and life is what DELTA is about. To excite practitioners to do the same and to convince parents that they have the skills is why I continue to be involved in DELTA. As a Trustee, Vice Chair and now Chair I have been able to make a difference in a small way. Being involved in weekend workshops for practitioners and parents and in running a pre-school and over the last 10 years the Primary Summer School for families I continue to spread the word. And in my daily work I like to keep up to date with such initiatives as digital aids, cochlear implants and other associated technologies. I believe the Newborn Hearing programme has made a difference as have the Early Support materials that are now available for deaf children and their families. I enjoy my work and am priviledged to work with families, children, schools and practitioners that know they are making a difference when they take on board the Natural Aural approach.

As a trustee I feel I can continue to improve the choices for deaf children.

In my other life I live in Oxfordshire with my husband Steve, my 18 year old son Nick and 3 delinquent cats. I love my garden and dabble a little in pottery (when I have the time).

I usually start my day in the gym where I run, read and get ready for the day ahead. I enjoy a game of squash at the weekend and generally enjoy being active. This probably comes from my background, as I grew up in New Zealand where I lived a very 'outdoors' life style. However I have spent the last 26 years in England and despite the weather I am pleased to make my home here. Since I have been here I have trained as a Teacher of the deaf, and Educational Audiologist and have achieved my masters degree in Early Years Support of Hearing impaired Children. In my work and with DELTA I have made some long lasting and close friends. Here is my home now. I have found my niche.
